Building Up Our Mob

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

We recently conducted a community survey asking what would make the  Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community more comfortable using mainstream services on the Northside. The community would like to see more flags, artwork and Aboriginal workers in these services. We would also like to see the staff working in these services conduct cultural awareness training. On the whole, the local community feels comfortable using most mainstream services on the Northside, with just a few changes suggested.

Girl’s Camp 2012

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

The girls brought to the group their own individual culture, beliefs and structure. In sharing their stories, they respected and trusted each other. The sports program showed that the girls were great team players and climbers, displayed confidence yet had fun. The programs brought them together, boosted self – belief and self – discipline and identified what physical activities they enjoyed and trying it out.

All the girls followed the rules and respected each other and the other person’s space. They also respected each other’s discussions and encouraged each other when they felt challenged. They all enjoyed the beach, the yarning circles and the campfire. Thank you to the camp leaders for all their support and the families for getting them there to be a part of a successful camp. Camp grounds and staff were great, very supportive and only too happy to oblige the girls’ needs to run the camp smoothly.
